Loving what we do.

How important is that?

And how does that apply to our horses?

Your parents sit everyone down for a family meeting.  You can tell they have good news with the grins that they are both trying to hide from you and your sister.  You squirm impatiently wondering what is going on! As wonderful fantasies of what it could be dances in your head.   Wondering why it is taking them so long to just get on with it and tell you!

You can't believe what you hear.  Really?  Really, really, really you shriek joyfully.  Your parents that were so health conscious saying they had decided it wasn't right that they made all the decisions so they had decided that from now on we could have dessert after every supper.  Each and every time.

You can't believe your ears.  Thoughts of strudel and cake, donuts and cupcakes dancing through your brain and of course, your favourite.  Pumpkin Pie.

*When Environment Influences Brain Size

Interestingly, a new study in humans shows that the longer the time Romanian orphans spent in the institutions as babies, the smaller their total brain volume, with these changes being associated with a lower IQ. You can read more about that study here

We can speculate why, but do we really need to?  Is the lesson not that environment influences, changes things.

And knowing that, what are we doing to our horses?

The Whole *The Unity of the Head

The head is not separate from the body.  It is intimately tied to every movement of shoulder and leg and the movement in the rest of the body of the horse.  They are one.  Not two.  If we expect our horses to move freely throughout their body, we need to be aware of this.

Limitations of movement happen when we forget that.

*The Toxicity of Caring

I was shocked, horrified by what I was seeing. Not understanding how people could do something like this!!!!!

I could be talking about so many different things but at that time I was six months in on a new online equestrian magazine and the topic was rollkur the practice of overbending the horse as a training method which sadly limits sight, breath, damaging physically and emotionally on so many different levels.

But it turned out few were aware of the practice that was rampant, especially in dressage with top level Olympic riders.  Few aware because what was happening in the training ring was not being reported on, because anyone who tried was threatened legally with repercussions to their livelihood. Although the practice was rampant and growing everywhere.

But those who wanted to bring pictures to the world to see the extreme postures the horses were going through in the name of training were trying hard, working behind the scenes trying to find a way to get the word out but couldn't find a footing.  It didn't help that one of those riders' families basically owned every news publication outlet in her country.  So, between the threats, the lack of knowledge on the damage caused and the influence exerted, these images of rollkur were kept buried.

Shocked, disbelieving, hurting for the horses I offered to post the images collected thinking, to be honest, if they wanted to sue me, they couldn't get blood out of a rock.  Yes, it could destroy what I was trying to build.  But...  the pain these poor horses were in... well there really was no choice.  I must say first I did next to nothing.  I just published what had already been so painstakingly gathered.  I didn't gather the material, put together the material available on why this was so wrong, at least not then.

Within hours of the release of that issue and those images, the equestrian world was in an uproar. My site crashed as everyone at once tried to access those images.  At that time, it was on various discussion boards not social media that people shared their thoughts and ideas and 70 equestrian discussion boards blew up linking to the site and those horrible images.  Some in languages that I had never seen before.

There was so much shock.  People horrified by the images.  Completely unaware that this was happening.  And I committed from that point forwards to include at least one article each and every issue to make sure attention was kept on this issue.

Once the floodgates were opened so many people knew after those first few hours what was going on, the genie was out of the bottle.  And there was no way that threats could be used against everyone. No way to try to sue that many people.

*Facilitated Programs: We Need to Expect More for Our Horses in Our Facilitated Programs

Time, I thought to check out what others mean by an equine facilitated program.

And they show a picture of a sweet mare with a gorgeous soft eye, and all you can think is that she would be perfect for this.

But then you look closer, and you begin to wonder.

And then you see another photo, one with her head and neck raised.  And shoot your suspicions are validated.

Incorrect muscling showing a lower neck that is well developed and an upper neck that is the opposite.  Exactly what we don't want to see in our horses.

My early experience was working in a therapeutic riding program working to bring health to those with physical, mental, and emotional issues.

Like most programs we relied on donated horses which sadly were usually donated because they have some kind of physical issue, as this is always considered a nice way to retire a horse and at the same time help others.

But there is a problem here.

A problem if you are hoping to bring physical health to human bodies. Bodies that never had or didn't remember the patterns needed in muscles on how to sit up or remember what it was like to walk. Here we are relying on what the horses can give them.  Patterns transferred physically from the horse to the rider.

Aids *Is the horse avoiding your hands

I came across a list of questions posted by an instructor and a lot of the questions were relevant but somehow, I felt out of place. I felt that most of these questions in a way had nothing to do with where I have come to on this journey.  But I couldn't figure out why. I felt so out of place as if these questions had nothing to do with me, had nothing to do with what I would teach.  But on the other hand, just looking at the questions objectively and individually weren't these exactly the kind of things that I was looking for?

Questions like "How balanced is the rider?"  Of course, I would be looking at how balanced the rider is.  Wouldn't I?

Yet I still felt out of place, like this was no longer my world.

*What People Miss / An Invitation to Say No

Things change when no becomes part of your relationship. When no is something said and accepted.

What people miss is that positive or reward-based training is inviting the animal to participate.  An invitation that says you have a right to say no.  An invitation that says I am giving you a chance to make a   choice.  And if your choice is no, that is okay.

Clicker training for example is well aware that no might be an answer, it is just that we hope to change behaviour by rewarding what we like while ignoring what we don't want.

When the history of training is all about control and making the animal do what we want, we often carry that in us, often unaware. That concept still there even when it isn't supposed to be a part of this.

The Curb Bit Tells All

The curb bit with its lever arm is a telling bit. If you want to truly understand the mastery of the rider before you, look first to the curb bit.

The curb bit does not lie. You can tell in a moment, in a single glance, what is happening between rider and horse.

A guideline that can be taught even to the beginner rider.

A guideline that tells the truth always.

What I Want for You: Beautiful Beginnings

Beautiful Beginnings with Our Horses

"We can create from the very beginning a Horseman who is so exquisite that they bring out the best not only in themselves but in their horses."

From the very beginning…

Every rider of every ability and every age deserves to be started in such a way that what they are doing is riding in truth from the very beginning. Every horse deserves to have this protection.

Our duty to make sure that every horse is protected from their own rider. And when we do so, what we create is beautiful from the very beginning.

*From a Position of Strength

+Bay Stallion Cantering

"We don't seem to realize that we only seem to know how to interact with the horse from a position of strength.."

Determined that the solution is to outpower the powerful.…

The more power or strength that you have to exert, the harder it will be to ever find your way back again.

Outpowering the powerful an answer that forgets that children can ride and the horses listen, take care of them.

The point not to outpower the powerful but to discover how powerful you can be. How powerful your life can become. Power not taken from another but found within yourself and how they can help, if we let them.

*Why Do I Make My Horse Look Tiny

""Anyone care to explain why I make my 16.3h thoroughbred look tiny... I just wanna understand""

An absolutely brilliant question.

The question absolutely brilliant. Showing how much the rider knew without even realizing it.  Knowing the right question to ask is where we all need to start.

There is more power in questions than there are in answers.

I knew the most important thing was that the question was asked, and if this rider could keep this question in her heart, she would start her own insightful journey.

*Wild Horses Healing the Earth Part 1

Wild Horse Digging for Water in the Desert

"Time to understand how horses can make a difference in the health of any ecosystem."

Wild Horses Healing the Earth.

If we don't understand...

If we don't understand the value of the wild horse to the ecosystem, we don't realize the mistake we are making when we take them off the land.

This isn't just about the horses.

It isn't just about the heartbreaking loss of watching wild horses running free, lifting up our hearts and our spirits.

It is about how the entire ecosystem suffers when they are gone.

If we don't have the knowledge, the right information, we lack the ability to make the right choices.
