**Lost to the Adults

The glorious brilliance of this cannot be overstated.

"The rider should in no way attempt to raise, lower, or position the horse's head with the hands. The way a horse carries his head is merely an indication of the way he is using his body."

Do you know where this brilliant quote came from?

Blue Zeus by Carol Walker

I had to stop.

I had to stop because the tears started coming.

I put the book aside and picked it up again. Read a few more pages and my heart, broke all over again.

I am not sure why this book had such a profound influence upon me. I am not sure if it was the ongoing imagery on every page that made me feel like I was right there with them.

Or perhaps it was the flow of the book as we started with meeting the family, getting to know them. We didn’t just jump in to what was to come.

*Editorial: The Ridiculous False Narrative of Dressage Tests

There is an Oompa Loompa in the room.  Something so strange that none of us are acknowledging it.

The Ridiculousness of Dressage Tests and the False Narrative they tell us.

The Ridiculous False Narrative of Dressage Tests -- Not only ridiculous but damaging.

We now know that the spine is fully formed and developed on the horse at 6 years of age, let's keep that in mind as we progress in this discussion as well.

The FEI dressage test for the 4-year-old horse seems basic enough.  Working walk, trot and canter and at worse a 20-meter circle.  Of course, this won't work for all horses and all breeds.

The preliminary dressage test for 5-year-olds, note this is the preliminary test, includes half-circles at 10 meters, counter canter, medium walk and trot, and..... collected trot.

So where did that come from???

All of a sudden you are supposed to have the magic of collection. Collection has magically appeared?  From where?????

You have been working on working trot and poof collection appears?  Like a rabbit out of a hat?

Actually, very much like a rabbit out of a hat.  I mean who expects to find a rabbit in a hat?  When was the last time you went to the closet, picked up your hat and went 'Oh dang, there is a rabbit here.'

Truth & Patience: The First Lessons

Truth the First Lesson

Horses Never Lie, Can't Lie, Don’t Lie and never sit in judgment. Yet they give you a mirror to what you are, who you are, and are waiting for you to come back - acknowledging the truth of you. They give you answers that you didn't know you were waiting for. Give you answers to what you didn't even know you needed.

When you work with an instructor or Kjrsos Guide, their job is to do much the same. To show you sides of yourself that perhaps you haven't paid attention to yet. To open your awareness of not just what you do, but what you don't know, no matter how weird at first you might think it is. Creating the possibility of a new reality that is waiting for you. Because in the end, that is what learning is.  Creating a new reality that you didn't know about before.

For many, those lessons begin when learning how to ride. And it is here that the instructor has to be the most brutal, the most honest. Because the moment you step in front of us while we care about you, first, we have to help protect the horse. Protect the horse from you. You no longer become our priority. The horses do or at least they should be because too often they are the ones whose voice doesn't get heard. But whether you ride or not, not to be honest?  Is not actually helping. But it is a choice that many make when interacting with others.

Developing a Healthy Qi in the Equine Body

The Challenge to change the way we think.

These are not blocks.. not restrictions.. instead what happens if we change our perspective to think activation instead.

"To maintain pain-free, optimal health, chi or energy should circulate throughout your entire body, without disruption, in a smooth, powerful fashion.

The classic Chinese medical phrase is teng jr bu tong. If the circulation of your chi is blocked (bu tong), you have pain and disease (teng). Conversely, if your chi or life force energy in your acupuncture meridian lines if fully connected and circulating without blockages (tong), you have neither pain nor disease (bu tong) – tong jr bu teng.

Making your chi tong is the most basic goal of Chinese medicine and most apparent with tai chi, qigong and acupuncture. Balancing out and connecting your chi so that it has no blockages"

This definition of chi could have been written for the key concepts behind Kjrsos.

*What Should We Be Asking Our Instructors to Teach Us First?

Ask yourself, can you feel which leg moves when?

Ask yourself, can you feel for the exact spot to apply an outside weight bearing rein for it to be effective?

Ask yourself, can you feel the angle of the leading rein throughout its entire arc and how that merges with what is happening inside the horse?

Can you feel the perfect size circle for your horse?

Can you feel the diagonal of the trot move forward, as you match the energy that is inside of him?

The Air He Breathes

Nature optimizes life to be successful.

The wild horse to be successful needs to be able to run.

Oxygen flows down to lungs through nostrils flared, nose extended, neck long by reaching forward limiting any impediment to the air so necessary for life.  This is nature optimizing one of her most beautiful creatures.

Because Nature understands flow dynamics.

Throw Your Heart Over The Fence

"Throw Your Heart Over the Fence."

Why?

Why the heck would instructors all over the world tell their riders this old adage?

For centuries, in one form or another in every language, riders have heard these words.

"Throw your heart over the fence."

Why?

Why say this?

Why would these words make a difference?

Maybe it is time to unpack what is behind these words. To dig in and find out why instructors continue to use them year after year, rider after rider.

The short answer is that this makes a difference.  Helps with the problem of the horse refusing to go over a fence, watching them stop suddenly while the rider loses his balance because he was ready to go over.

So, the short answer is that it works, the horse goes over the jump.

And because it works, nobody stops and asks, why??

Why does this work?

And once you have that answer, you realize that all along, all this time, we have known something that we never address.

Because it turns out that all along, we have been talking about what is behind our failures and our successes with our horses.

We just didn't realize it.

And having never extrapolated it, we have missed the important thing we should have been teaching all along. Perhaps the most important thing that we should have been teaching or at least exploring because it is the answer to more than just getting our horses over a jump.

So, let's unpack!

The Buckskin's Stare

His focus complete, he stares towards...what?

Is it something unknown? Is he wondering what is that?

Perhaps another herd? Is he wondering whether he maybe could make a new friend?

But there is no doubt, that there is something definitely there. Not a single one of us can doubt it.  Nor can any of us doubt where to turn our own heads to look, to see what is there. His eyes, his face, his ears, his muzzle all point the way.

And yet that isn't quite true.

Decisions Not From Fear

"Decisions should be made out of love, not fear."

Maggie Cox

It occurred to me as I was reading this that too many of our decisions especially when we work with horses are made from the common base of the fear that is natural when faced with a creature so much more powerful than we are.  No matter how much we love horses that fear is never more than a quick heart-stopping flash away.  The horse spooking suddenly as we lead him can leave us flattened to the ground, have 1200 lbs nailed onto our big toe, or leave us with rope burns on our hands.

There is nothing more terrifying than being on the back of a horse and losing control and having the horse thundering madly ahead and you with no control over the speed, the direction, not knowing how long you will be able to stay on.

Or the fear experienced on the back of a horse that decides to buck madly, desperate to toss you with all of his power into the dirt, not knowing if this time... it will be your neck that will snap.

No matter how many years, or how much you trust the horse you are with, your body reacts surging with adrenalin before your mind kicks in.  The fear instant, your stomach clenching, your nerves screaming for action.

Start Your Day with Inspiration

The Kjrsos instructor understands that their job is to do more than teach someone to hold the reins.  They understand this about more than showing others how this can be a superior way to meditate, they understand their job is to be inspiring.  To inspire others.

And one single truth exists. That you can't inspire another...
