Training Only Strengthens Whatever is Being Used
You have given your horse years of patient, careful work, and he is stronger for it. That much is not in question. What is in question is what got stronger — and there is a reason almost nobody thinks to ask.
You were taught that good work builds a good horse. So you have given him good work — soft, unhurried, year after year. And he has grown stronger. He holds up better. He is more consistent than he has ever been, and every sign you were taught to read tells you the same thing: this is progress. But a body has no way of knowing which part of what it is doing was the part you intended. It has one response to demand, and it does not ask permission before it answers. What if the consistency you have been reading as progress is the very thing that should stop you cold — and the horse stopped telling you something a long time ago?
