When We Don't Respect The Miracle of the Horizontal Pupil
What does it do to the horses when their vision is deliberately obstructed? This isn't a hypothetical. This is the reality we impose on horses, often unknowingly, when we interfere with one of their most crucial survival mechanisms: their remarkable vision. We have a responsibility to do better.
Article Summary
As a horse lowers its head to graze, its eyeballs can rotate up to 50 degrees or more in opposite directions within their sockets. This process, known as cyclorotation, keeps their horizontal pupils perfectly level with the horizon, regardless of their head's angle. Think of it as a built-in gyroscope, ensuring their "predator-scanning" view is never compromised, even when their nose is to the ground.
